What is anti-retraction dental handpiece?
When the dentist depresses the foot pedal, the movement speed of the high-speed dental handpiece can generally be as high as 350,000rpm/min. The moment it stops in the oral cavity, the head area shows negative pressure, and pathogenic microorganisms from the patient’s mouth can be sucked back into the head of the dental handpiece with saliva and blood through the cooling water pipeline and cooling air pipeline of the dental handpiece and subsequently into the dental chair pipeline, causing contamination of the dental handpiece and the dental unit, which will also cause cross-infection in subsequent operations.
To solve this problem, the high-speed dental handpiece with anti-retraction systerm was created. The special design of the “anti-suckback valve” implanted inside the dental handpiece prevents microorganisms from being sucked back into the dental handpiece when it is stopped. The use of the anti-suckback dental handpiece has been shown to significantly reduce the amount of internal bacteria sucked back into the dental handpiece compared to conventional dental handpieces. However, the anti-suckback dental handpiece does not prevent all bacteria from entering the interior of the handpiece, and it is not a substitute for cleaning bacteria in the dental handpiece. On the one hand, due to the complex structure of the dental handpiece, even with the use of anti-suction devices, contamination caused by liquid entering the front crevice of the dental handpiece is still inevitable; it has also been studied and confirmed that the failure rate of the anti-suction valve can be as high as 74%. On the other hand, the outer surface of the handpiece will also be in direct contact with the patient’s blood and saliva, which is a highly dangerous item.
Therefore, regardless of the type of dental handpiece, whether or not there is an anti-suckback device, the dental handpiece should be cleaned, disinfected and sterilized after use in accordance with the operating instructions.
